Gareth Shiels

Gareth lives and works as a sculptor in Cork city.

He has a background in design as a graduate of N.C.A.D. however he later relocated to England to study Architectural Stone carving at Weymouth College on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset. This led to working for five years as a stone carver on St. Paul’s Cathedral culminating in the 300th anniversary of this renowned London landmark in 2011. Since then he has worked on various private commissions in both Ireland and the U.K. Most recently exhibiting at the Ballymaloe House sculpture exhibition in 2020.

His stone sculptures resonate with echoes from the past whether an established history or folklore while all the time being influenced by the inherent craftsmanship of stone cutting. Ultimately, he strives to create pieces that people will not only want to look at but also to touch; to reach out and feel the contrasting chiselled finishes and cool honed surfaces.
